Who needs coaching to succeed? Don’t ask Joyce Mbaya unless you have enough time to listen. She talks about the subject with the passion of a preacher. “A coach,” she says, “is like a personal referee to cheer you on and guide you towards your greatest achievements.” Ms Mbaya, the founder of business consulting and coaching firm GIBEBE, often quotes the inspiring words of Albert Einstein, the German-born theoretical physicist: “It takes a different kind of thinking to solve a problem than the kind of thinking which produced the problem.”

Ms Joyce Mbaya, who surprised many in 2008 when she was recruited as a Kenyan representative to the globally competitive business reality show The Apprentice Africa at the age of 25, has challenged employers to empower their workers by providing an inspiring work environment.
“There is a need to recognise and adjust to a human resource shift that has employees more interested in highly empowered work environments,” said Ms Mbaya. This way, she said, organisations were able to achieve their business goals by hiring and retaining the right staff.

During the Apprentice Africa competition in 2008, Joyce Mbaya made a name for herself. Even after she was ‘fired’, it seemed that her future was safe. Back at her job with a leading telcoms company, she was a rising star on the fast track to management status. Then, in 2009, she quit. “I had to make a choice. In the end, I knew that my place was not at the company,” she says.
